I lie in bed all night, waiting for the surveillance to come back, or any news, a clue as to where Harper was taken and by whom. I can’t sleep. I won’t sleep until I find her.

I push off the bed then walk down the stairs and see Dad cradling Mum in his arms, stroking her hair as she cries. Her eyes are still swollen shut and the left side of her face is a deep purple. I can see the storm brewing inside of Dad. It mirrors the one inside of me.

The girls both clung to me all evening. I know it was only because I was the one who found them. Had they not needed me, I would have surely fallen apart.

Tessa is sitting on the couch with John and Caroline, looking just like Emma, beaten and in intense physical pain. Through her eyes, I can see the deep despair. She is being torn apart, just like I am. Like we all are.

I walk over and kneel before her. “She’s out there, Tessa. She’s alive. I promise I’ll find her. I won’t stop looking until I’ve brought her back to you.”

She pulls me into a hug and sobs into my neck. “What if …? What if—”

“She’s alive; I feel it. So do you. Close your eyes and see her. Her heart is beating, and she is scared, but she knows we will find her.”

My phone chimes in my pocket, and I pull it out and read the message.

- Call me as soon as you can … Z
